News of The Borneo Initiative (TBI) first appeared in our October 2010 newsletter. TBI has continued to expand and has already demonstrated some remarkable successes as the stories in this newsletter illustrate.

By now, most of our readers have heard of ‘The Borneo Initiative’, a certification support program that “puts money on the table” to help Indonesian forest concession companies achieve sustainable forest management certification.
The Borneo Initiative (TBI) is an international foundation based in the Netherlands. How it differs from other pro-certification organizations, is in its commitment to direct financially support to forest concession companies who would like to pursue LEI-FSC certification. The TBI model offers $2 per hectare towards offsetting the external costs of certification.
TBI has been very successful at raising funds to support this commitment and, as a result, is set to expand its engagement with the Indonesian forest sector. TBI began its activities in January 2010 by signing on the first group of concession. Two subsequent inductions have brought the number of participating companies up to 17, and the list is set to expand further with the fourth signing ceremony scheduled for January 2012.

The TBI funded expansion of certification supported activity, aims to make Indonesia a world leader in tropical forest certification. According to Jesse Kuiper of TBI, “...we see a high potential for expanding certified forest management in Indonesia. Initially, we aim for another 4 million hectares of FSC certified natural forest by year 2015, but we think we can do even more.”
If you represent a forest concession company and have considered forest certification, this is a golden opportunity to apply for financial and technical support. It is unlikely that such an offer will ever be put on the table again. For more information, contact:
