PT Amindo Wana Persada - Concession
RIL training in PT Amindo Wana Persada - Concession
This relatively new concession is the result of a division of the former PT Alas Helau. The new area of
43,680 ha is located in a remote location in Berau District. The company is rapidly developing its human and physical resources with the aim of achieving sustainable forest management.
Most of the logs from this concession are processed in the Samarinda industry of Tirta Mahakam.
TFF’s InvolvementTFF has carried out a training needs assessment and has proposed a long-term training program in RIL and related issues concerned with legality and CoC. The first training in RIL was carried out in late 2006.
Current StatusCompany management has experienced difficulty recruiting adequate competent staff, but is preparing for further training inputs.
PT Belayan River Timber - Concession

This
97,500 ha concession, located in the mid-reaches of the Mahakam River, has some of the richest timber stands in the country.
Ownership of the concession changed hands in 2008 to a Surabaya based company. The concession, however, continues to sell logs on the open market.
TFF’s Involvement
TFF has conducted a basic RIL training, base line assessment for certification and has prepared a certification action plan based on a full-assessment carried out by Control Union Certification.
Current Status
TFF has recruited this concession as a participant of 'The Borneo Initiative' certification support program.
PT Kemakmuran Berka Timber - Concession
PT Kemakmuran Berka Timber - concession
This
72,000 ha concession is located in the upper reaches of the Mahakam River and is a member of the Roda Mas Group. Logs are processed in the company’s industry, PT Tirtah Mahakam in Samarinda.
Together with the adjacent PT Roda Mas Timber, this area is a prime candidate for forest certification.
TFF’s Involvement
TFF has conducted a training needs assessment and has proposed this concession for further assistance under a certification support program.
Current Status
KBT management has chosen technical assistance offered by TNC in mapping, social issues, HCV, and certification support.
PT Narkata Rimba Timber - Concession
PT Narkata Rimba Timber - concession
Located in the mountainous terrain of East Kalimantan, this
68,000 ha concession is nearing the end of its first, 20 year license.
Due to the terrain condition, the concession has been relatively lightly logged and logged over forests are in excellent condition.
The Alas Kusuma Group, sold this concession to Surabaya based industry, in 2008.
TFF’s InvolvementTFF has conducted a base-line assessment against the RIL standard and has proposed an RIL training program along with various technical inputs related to planning. TFF has also assisted Narkata as Chief Technical adviser under The Borneo Initiative certification assistance program.
Current Status
Narkata achieved FSC certification on August 16, 2011.
PT Ratah Timber - Concession
PT Ratah Timber
This
97,690 ha concession belonging to the Roda Mas Group, is located in the mid-reaches of the Mahakam drainage.
The concession has weathered some difficult times but has now regrouped and is embarking on an aggressive program towards sustainable forest management with keen support of senior management at corporate headquarters.
TFF’s Involvement
TFF’s initial involvement dates back to TFF’s establishment in Indonesia. TFF has signed an MOU which commits the company to an intensive training program in RIL. Corporate management are also keen to prepare the company for legality and chain of custody audit.
Current Status
An ambitious training program in RIL was launched in 2008 and is continuing. Ratah Timber has joined the Borneo Initiative under WWF - GFTN sponsorship.
PT Roda Mas Timber - Concession
PT Roda Mas Timber - concession
Located in the upper reacher of the Mahakam River of East Kalimantan, this 99,520 ha concession is long-standing participant of TFF's training activities.
Roda Mas ships all of its logs to the industry of PT. Tirta Mahakam located in Samarinda.
TFF’s Involvement
Roda Mas has long standing history of involvement with TFF for RIL training and more recently, with legality and CoC issues. Roda Mas was awarded a certificate of legality in October 2007 by TUV-Indonesia as a recognition member of TFF's Forest-Market Linking Program.
Current Status
Roda Mas is now committed to full certification with technical assistance from TFF under 'The Borneo Initiative'. Pre-assessments and full assessments have been carried out and outstanding CAR's are now being addressed.
PT Sumalindo Lestari Jaya II - Concession
PT Sumalindo Lestari Jaya
This major concession of 276,600 ha has a solid reputation as one of Indonesia’s leaders in the forest sector. Sumalindo Unit II, was the second concession in the country to achieve FSC certification and continues to make improvements in all aspects of its forest management.
TFF’s InvolvementTFF has provided specific technical assistance related to harvesting practices and the utilization of logging waste. This has involved training and technical advice.
Current StatusTFF continues to provide technical advice on request from the company on specific issues primarily related to harvesting and utilization.
PT Tirta Mahakam Resources - Industry (Location : Samarinda)
PT Tirta Mahakam Resources - industry
This is a major plywood producer located in Samarinda, East Kalimantan.
The industry receives its logs from its corporate concessions located on the Mahakam River as well as from a member of closely affiliated concessions.
TFF’s InvolvementThis industry is the focal point for a major initiative to qualify all of its supplying concessions for a certificate of legality and independently monitored CoC systems. Once these systems are in place, this industry will be the largest supplier of Legally Verified plywood on the market.
Current StatusTirta Mahakam Samarinda as well as its flooring industry in Gresik , were awarded a CoC certificate for "Legal Verified" in early 2008.
PT Timberdana - Concession

This 76,340 hectares concession is located in the gentle terrain typical of the lower reaches of the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan. Timberdana logs are processed in the plywood industry of PT. Rimba Karya Raya located downstream in the Samarinda area.
TFF’s Involvement
Under recently signed MOU, TFF has launched a full scale RIL training program which is expected to extend into 2010.
Current Status
Implementation of a training program for RIL contain with 2 training inputs already delivered.
PT Balikpapan Forest Industries - Concession
Mount at the center of the BFI concession
This is one of the oldest concessions in Indonesia and is now well into its second cutting cycle. The concession supports a major plywood factory located nearby.
Located across the inlet from the major city of Balikpapan, this 140,845 ha concession and its adjacent industry have faced many challenges over the 30+ years since its establishment. Faced with a shrinking concession area and an ever more demanding market situation, the management have requested assistance in achieving the management goal of forest certification.
TFF’s Involvement
TFF has signed and MOU with BFI and has just completed a comprehensive gap assessment for certification as the first step in implementing this MOU.
Current Status
A wide range of activities proposed and now under review.
PT Civika Wana Lestari - Concession

Located in the upper reaches of the Kayan River in East Kalimantan, this 53,000 ha concession (along with its sister concession, the adjacent PT Sarana Trirasa Bhakti), are some of the most recent entries into the TFF RIL training program.
TFF’s Involvement
An MOU between the company and TFF has spelled out the framework for a RIL training program. The first of three training modules was delivered in April 2010. Participants from both the CWL and the adjacent STB concession participated in the training.
Current Status
The second training is expected to be delivered before the end of 2010.
PT Sarana Trirasa Bhakti - Concession

Located in the upper reaches of the Kayan River in East Kalimantan, this 41,000 ha concession (along with its sister concession, the adjacent PT Civika Wana Lestari), are some of the most recent entries into the TFF RIL training program.
TFF’s Involvement
An MOU between the company and TFF has spelled out the framework for a RIL training program. The first of three training modules was delivered in April 2010. Participants from both the STB and the STB concession combined for a joint training in RIL contour and tree position mapping.
Current Status
The second training is expected to be delivered before the end of 2010.
