An Australian academic says there should be a re-evaluation of how to deal with climate change and its effect on the people who live in the Pacific islands.
Professor Jon Barnett from the Melbourne University says people should be given all the help they need to adapt to climate change before seeking the option of migration.
"I'm concerned that when we simply talk about the problem of climate change in terms of refugees or forced migrants we're losing sight of all the things we should be doing to prevent that happening," he said.
"We should be reducing our emissions and we should be assisting the countries in the region to adapt to climate change so that migration is not something people don't have a choice about."
"To have the choice of staying, we have to invest in their ability and assist them to adapt to climate change so they can stay for as long as possible. And that is something that should be possible for many, many decades."
