Reduced tree clearing lowers agricultural emissions

Tuesday, 19/04/2011

A decline in tree clearing is the main reason there's been 50 per cent cut in emissions from agriculture, fisheries and forestry in the past twenty years.

The National Greenhouse Accounts calculates that emissions from the three industries fell by 10 per cent from 2008 to 2009, and 50 per cent since 1990.

Andrew Macintosh from the Australian National University says there's been a 20 per cent reduction in deforestation emissions between 2008 and 2009.

He says the other reason for the reduction in agricultural emissions is because there's less livestock.

"For agriculture the main shift has been the decline in emissions from sheep, as a result in the fall in the size of the sheep herd," he says.

"There's been an increase in cattle over the same period, but not as much as the decline in sheep numbers."

"That's why we've seen emissions from that sector decline."
