Govt to include tree planting at schools
The Jakarta Post | Mon, 01/02/2012 10:44 AM
JAKARTA: The Education and Culture Ministry and the Forestry Ministry have signed an agreement to introduce tree planting into the school curriculum to support land and forest conservation.
Forestry Ministry forest and land rehabilitations director Billy Hindra said the inclusion reflected the agreement of both institutions to support the one million trees planting movement.
“Students will be taught to plant trees in school yards and around. We have modules in tree planting, which can be used by students. We will also send instructors to schools to help,” he said on Sunday as quoted by kompas.com.
Education and Culture Ministry’s secretary for secondary education Mustaghfirin Amin said that the curriculum would be first introduced to senior high and vocational schools.
“We will insert the material while delivering biology subjects and extracurricular programs to around 1,500 schools in the beginning,” said Mustaghfirin.
He added that schools would also introduce the program to boy scout activities as well as to youth Red Cross programs.
