The Jakarta Post | Thu, 12/29/2011 9:24 AM
SURAKARTA: The city of Surakarta, or Solo, is planning to establish urban forests in 26 open spaces with a total size of 50 hectares. The size of each forest will vary, starting from 0.25 hectare as set out in Government Regulation No. 63/2003 on urban forests.
Of the total 50 hectares, 8 hectares is being donated by the state-own forestry company in the city.
“The mayor of Solo has a program to make the city greener. When we get approval from Jakarta to support the program, we will start with open spaces in Balekambang Park and nearby Muhammadiyah University [UMS] campus,” said forestry office head Iwan Setiawan Wisnutomo.
Balekambang Park and the UMS campus, respectively 3.34 hectares and 5 hectares in size, are two of 26 open spaces in the city to be made into forests.
