Green program gets more funds

Ni Komang Erviani, The Jakarta Post, Denpasar | Mon, 01/30/2012 11:45 AM

The administration is looking to increase funds for its “Bali Clean and Green” program from Rp 9.51 billion last year to Rp 10.62 billion this year.

“The fund will be used to organize educational sessions and public gatherings aimed at increasing the people’s awareness of environmental issues and the importance of establishing an island-wide consensus on protecting the island’s environment,” Bali Environmental Agency head Anak Agung Gde Alit Sastrawan recently said.

The fund has also been earmarked to finance an environmental assessment campaign targeting private enterprises across the island, as well as to assist villages that are willing to adopt eco-friendly principles.

“Bali Clean and Green” is one of the eight priority programs adopted by Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika since the first year of his administration in 2008. The program aims at developing green culture, a green economy as well as the preservation and protection of the island’s natural heritage.

Pastika stressed that the administration allocated more funds for the program to show its commitment for the future of Bali.

“We have declared Bali a green province. This declaration brings several consequences, including on budget allocations. We are serious about this program and that is why we increased the program allocation,” he said.

By the end of 2011, the program had succeeded in achieving some of its objectives, one of which was the establishment of eco-friendly schools. So far, four schools had been transformed into pilot projects by eco-friendly schools. By the end of 2013, the number is expected to reach nine schools.

“The provincial administration provides the schools with various financial and technical assistance to help them implement green principles,” Sastrawan said, adding that all participating schools now have run and managed their own trash management systems.

So far, educational sessions and public gatherings had been organized in 18 subdistricts across the island. By the end of 2013, as many as 57 subdistricts should have been covered by these activities.

The fund from the “Bali Clean and Green Program” had also been used to construct 211 trash management facilities.

“There are many things that we should do to achieve the target. Transforming Bali into a green province is not a simple thing, but we have to do it to make a real contribution toward efforts to save the planet,” Pastika added.

Bali topped the government’s environmental quality index in 2011, booking the highest score of 99.65 out of 29 provinces participating in the assessment.

“In Indonesia, we are the best. But if Bali is being compared with cities in neighboring countries, well, we are still lagging behind,” Pastika said.
