The Tropical Forest Foundation (TFF) opened a program in the SE Asia and Pacific Region in January 2003 with the establishment of an office in Jakarta, Indonesia. The focus of the Indonesia/SE Asia program is on Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) promotion, training, and demonstration.

Training Modules have been developed around specific activities and are delivered on request, to forest concessions throughout the country. Although the majority of TFF’s training activities have been in Indonesia, some extension work has also been done in Sarawak and Perak State, Malaysia.

TFF-Indonesia, publishes an occassional newsletter RIL & Certification in both English and Bahasa Indonesian. TFF has also developed technical procedures manuals as “how to” guides for the implementation of key aspects of RIL.

In 2003, TFF developed a pilot project in forest-market linking.
This project combines the issue of legality with the adoption of RIL. Through the establishment of an independently audited chain-of-custody. This pilot project has now been expanded and strengthened and now encompasses all key aspects of TFF-Indonesia activities.

In early 2004, TFF started implementation of a certification support program in partnership with a Dutch consulting company. The project, has been highly successful in assisting two forest concession to achieve FSC certification.

In the past, the Indonesia program has received donor support from USAID, USDA-Forest Service, ITTO, Home Depot, Association of Indonesian Forest Concessionaires, and private industry donations.

Currently, majority funding for TFF’s Indonesia program comes from a number of private sector initiatives representing major exporters as well as Indonesian forest companies.

TFF also receives contracted funding from The Nature Conservancy and specific project funding from WWF.
