On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, members of the board of directors of "The Borneo Initiative" (TBI), an international foundation based in the Netherlands, hosted a signing ceremony in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Jakarta.
TBI was established in 2008 as a funding facility to support LEI-FSC certification in Indonesia. TBI is supported by contributions from the Dutch building industry, timber importing companies, and the Dutch government. The funding model is based on a financial support value calculated at US$2.00 per hectare which will pay for external inputs to the certification effort.
Administratively, TBI has established a small office in Jakarta which will provide oversight for certification activities and disbursement of funds. The main activities will be carried out by participating forest concession companies in partnership with a technical certification support sponsor.
Tuesdays official signing ceremony saw the first five concession companies entering into a contract agreement with TBI, thus launching the first of a series of funding initiatives aimed at dramatically increasing the number of certified hectares in Indonesia. The second tier of funding is scheduled to be released in July, 2010.
Participants in the first round of funding included :
- PT Belayan River Timber (Intergroup Industries)
- PT Suka Jaya Makmur (SJM industry; Alas Kusuma Group)
- PT Sarmiento Parakantja Timber (Kayu Lapis Industries)
- PT Roda Mas Timber (Tirta Mahakam Industries)
- PT Sarang Sapta Putra (Hendradtna Industries)
TFF has secured the participation of the first four of these five companies and expects to be actively involved in assisting them towards the goal of FSC certification over the next two to three years.
