    TFF - Aceh activity

    Bencana besar Tsunami yang melanda wilayah pantai Propinsi Aceh pada tanggal 26 Desember 2004, menerjang tambak udang dan area persawahan di dataran pantai berpopulasi penduduk tinggi serta menghancurkan seluruh desa dan jalan-jalannya. Di area dataran rendah, gelombang pasang menembus hingga ke daratan sejauh empat kilometer.

    Salah satu area yang mengalami kerusahakan paling berat adalah Banda Aceh dimana gelombang tsunami menghancurkan seluruh komunitas pesisir pantai di teluk Banda Aceh dan menerjang hingga ke dalam kota. Kerusakan yang timbul pada tempat tinggal penduduk sangat nyata terlihat. Di area yang menghadap ke laut hampir semua bangunan hancur dan sekitar 80% penduduk dinyatakan tewas.

    Selama beberapa dekade, sebagian besar hutan bakau dan pohon nipah pada zona pesisir pantai telah dikonversi menjadi tambak udang dan tempat tinggal manusia. Tsunami tidak hanya menghancurkan seluruh komunitas namun juga jaringan, tambak udang, dan vegetasi alam yang tersisa pada zona pesisir yang merupakan salah satu sumber utama mata pencarian penduduk pantai di area teluk Banda Aceh.

    Animasi simulasi tsunami December 2004.Dalam kurun waktu setahun setelah tsunami, dua faktor yang tidak saling berhubungan muncul hampir bersamaan yang memberikan kesempatan bagi TFF untuk berkontribusi secara berarti dalam upaya rehabilitasi akibat bencana tsunami. Pertama-tama, TFF di mintai bantuan oleh Pusat Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat, yang merupakan lembaga penelitian dari suatu universitas swasta dan merupakan satu-satunya yang memiliki fakultas ilmu kehutanan di Aceh. Hal ini sesungguhnya bermula dari salah satu komunitas di pesisir pantai Banda Aceh, yang meminta bantuan untuk penanaman kembali hutan bakau sebagai daerah penyangga di sekitar tambak udang mereka.

    Tidak terlalu lama setelah itu, TFF mendapat tawaran dari satu donator, yang tidak ingin disebutkan namanya, yang tertarik membantu upaya rehabilitasi ekosistem akibat kerusakan yang ditimbulkan bencana tsunami di Aceh.

    Dua peristiwa ini terjadi nyaris bersamaan seperti satu rangkaian yang kemudian dengan cepat mengarah pada dirumuskannya konsep proyek dimana TFF memasuki suatu bentuk kegiatan baru.

    Barangkali hal yang membedakan upaya skala kecil ini dibandingkan kegiatan lain yang lebih besar yang juga mendapat dukungan donator adalah seluruh inisiatif kegiatan dimulai dari tingkat komunitas setempat. Mereka yang selamat dari tsunami memandang bahwa rehabilitasi tambak udang dan tanaman bakau di sekitar tambak udang merupakan hal yang pentng bagi kesejahteraan ekonomi dan kelangsungan perekonomian jangka panjang mereka.

    TFF yang secara cepat merespon permintaan masyarakat tersebut dibarengi dengan adanya bantuan donor membuat pelaksanaan proyek ini berhasil walaupun terdapat beberapa kesulitan operasional.

    PT Surya Mahkota Timber - Industry (Location : Tangerang)

    SMTThis is the ‘downstream’ manufacturing facility for wood originating in the companies concession under the name of PT Gaha Sentosa Permai in Central Kalimantan. Meranti and Bankirai is rough sawn in the sawmill near the concession and transferred to Surya Mahkota Timber where high quality scantling and decking products are manufactured.

    TFF’s Involvement

    TFF has conducted a baseline assessment and CoC training for Legal Verified.

    Current Status

    The company has just undergone third party CoC and legality audit.

    PT Tanjung Kreasi Parquet Industries  (Location : Semarang)

    TKPI Situated in Desa Pinggit approximately half way between Semarang and Magelang, this is Indonesia’s largest flooring factory. The industry specializes in engineered flooring.

    Raw materials for substrate and back is sourced primarily from local farmers and rubberwood estates. For the face layer, the company utilize selected local species plus importing a global selection of temperate and tropical woods.

    The company also operates a sawmill in Semarang where incoming material is resawn in preparation for the flooring industry.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has provided a broad range of services to the company including base line assessment for CoC, training workshops for FSC and Legal Verified CoC, investigations into controlled wood sources, and assistance in securing legal supplies of local materials.

    Current Status
    No recent engagement.

    PT Tirta Mahakam - Industry  (Location : Samarinda and Gresik)

    TMThis is the ‘downstream’ manufacturing facility of the Roda Mas Group which has it’s primary plywood industry located in Samarinda, East Kalimantan.

    The Gresik industry in East Java specializes in engineered flooring products utilizing the plywood base from the Samarinda factory combined with both locally and internationally sourced species for the face veneer.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted a baseline assessment and CoC training for FSC and Legal Verified.

    Current Status
    The industry has received a CoC certificate from TÜV Rheinland for the processing of logs from its sister concession that have passed the "Legal Compliance" audit.


    PT Karya Guna Ekatama - Industry  (Location : Surabaya)

    KGEKarya Guna Ekatama is a sawmill and moulding industry specializing in Merbau flooring products.
    The industry is in Surabaya and sources most of its log supply from log brokers located in the port of Surabaya.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted basic CoC assessment for the industry and provided technical guidance on CoC issues and raw material sourcing.

    Current Status
    The company has received TFF CoC training and a third party CoC audit.


    PT Agung Kharisma Jaya Abadi - Industry  (Location : Surabaya)

    AKJAPT Agung Kharisma Jaya Abadi is a sawmill and moulding industry located in Surabaya.
    The company specializes in Bankirai products which it sources from 'Legal Verified' suppliers, Indexim and Sindo Lumber.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF is facilitating the establishment of a CoC system in the industry as part of a verification of legal origin program being sponsored by DLH Nordisk. A CoC for legality has been issued.

    Current Status
    Company has a CoC certificate issued by TÜV-Rheinland which allow it to process Bankirai verified as compliant with the 'Legal Compliance' standard.

    PT Sari Bumi Kusuma / PT Harjohn Timber -  Industry (Location : Pontianak)

    SBKIIntegrated industry producing a wide range of plywood and solid wood moulding products, particularly using Bangkirai. This is a major industrial complex belonging to the Alas Kusuma Group. It processes logs from the Group’s concessions across the border in Central Kalimantan.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF provided baseline assessments, training, and technical assistance for the establishment of CoC systems for Legal Verified (2003) and FSC (2006).

    Current Status
    Major producer of FSC certified products. This industry processes all certified logs from the company’s concession in Central Kalimantan. TFF assistance on general oversight, training, and technical guidance is ongoing.

     


    PT Erna Djuliawati - Industry  (Location : Sanggau)

    EDIMajor producer for a wide range of plywood products including fancy panels, pre-processed flooring, as well as container and truck flooring. This is the main woodworking complex of the Lyman Group which sources the majority of it’s wood supply for the FSC certified forest concession across the border in Central Kalimantan.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF provided baseline assessments, training, and technical assistance for the establishment of CoC systems for Legal Verified (2004) and FSC (2005).

    Current Status
    Major producer of FSC certified products. This industry processes all certified logs from the company’s concession in Central Kalimantan. TFF assistance with CoC issues continues on an “as required” basis.

    PT Suka Jaya Makmur - Industry   (Location : Ketapang)

    SJMIIntegrated wood working industry producing plywood products as well as Meranti and Bankirai mouldings. This is the main woodworking complex of the Alas Kusuma Group for its southern concessions located in West and Central Kalimantan.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has provided baseline assessments, training, and technical assistance for CoC certification.

    Current Status
    The company received its FSC certification on June 30, 2011.

    PT Suka Jaya Makmur - Concession

    SJMThis is a 171,340 ha concession located in the southern portion of West Kalimantan and is the main concession of the Alas Kusuma Group supplying logs to the company’s industry in Ketapang. Base camp is situated outside the concession at the edge of the forest area.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has a relationship with SJM dating back to 2002. In 2003, TFF helped the company qualify for a certificate of legality and CoC issued by SmartWood. This was part of a TFF forest-market linking pilot project which demonstrated the feasibility of linking a forest management unit with a specific US market outlet. TFF has conducted extensive RIL training and research in this concession and has conducted a baseline assessment for WWF to qualify this concession for membership in the GFTN.
    More recently, TFF has facilitated an HCV assessment and the preparation of draft conservation management plan.

    Current Status
    SJM's certification efforts with intensive TFF support, resulted in the achievement of FSC certification in June 30, 2011.

    CV Pangkar Beggili - Concession

    SJMThis 30,195 ha West Kalimantan concession is typical of the new concession picture that is evolving out of the Ministry of Forests trend towards smaller concessions.  The need to amortize huge initial investments against a relatively small production capacity presents a major challenge for the concept of sustainable forest management.  Never-the-less, this new concession has requested assistance in achieving legality verification and meeting the TFF standard for RIL.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has implemented the first tow RIL training module under the RAFT project and is currently implementing complete set of RIL training modules for the concession under the USAID-IFACS project.

    Current Status
    To ensure successful uptake of RIL methods, TFF proposes the delivery of all three training modules in 2012.

    PT SBK - Tontang and Batasan - Concessions

    PT Sari Bumi Kusuma - TontangThe 75,200 ha concession area of PT. SBK-Tontang is managed along with the adjucent concession of PT Batasan (49,150 ha) in what is essentially a single integrated management unit.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has begun a program of RIL training in 2012.

    Current Status
    Completion of this training program will probably occur in 2013.

    PT Wanasokan Hasilindo - Concession

    PT Wanasokan HasilindoWanasokan Hasilindo a 49,000 ha concession recently become the third Alas Kusuma concession to commit to FSC certification.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF represents Wanasokan under The Borneo Initiative certification support program and is currently delivering a series of RIL trainings with IFACS funding support.

    Current Status
    Pre assessment and HCVF assessment have been carried out a major RIL training effort is underway.

    PT Surya Satrya Timur Corp. - Industry (Location : Banjarmasin)

    SSTThis is primarily a plywood industry located in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. The industry sources its logs from its concessions in Central Kalimantan. The main source of logs is PT Indexim Utama which is working closely with TFF on RIL training and CoC issues.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted a baseline assessment for setting up a CoC system in the industry for wood coming from PT Indexim Utama. This involvement has included CoC training and a number of follow-up visits.

    Current Status
    The company just undergone a legality and CoC audit starting with the Indexim concession and through the industry. TFF will continue collaborating with this industry in trying to bring market advantage to this audited supply chain.

    PT Carus Indonesia - Concession

    ED This is a 72,170 ha concession located in two district Gunung Mas and Katinggan of Central Kalimantan province and is one of the concessions of Dwima Group.

    Dwima Group is one of the oldest forest group concession in Indonesia. Begin operation in early 1970.

    TFF’s Involvement
    Carus Indonesia received various technical assistance inputs and RIL training and best practice forest management, specially road planning and construction from TFF.

    Current Status
    TFF continues to provide technical assistance on certification matters under an existing MOU. Recent inputs have been trainings in matters related to  technical assistance with RIL. Carus Indonesia is in a process for FSC certification.

    PT Dwimajaya Utama - Concession

    ED This is a 127,300 ha concession located in two district Gunung Mas and Katinggan of Central Kalimantan province and is one of the concessions of Dwima Group.

    Dwima Group is one of the oldest forest group concession in Indonesia. Begin operation in early 1970.

    TFF’s Involvement
    Dwima received various technical assistance inputs and RIL training and best practice forest management from TFF.

    In December, 2012, Dwimajaya Utama achieved FSC certification under a TFT certification assistance program.

    Current Status
    TFF continues to provide technical assistance on certification matters under an existing MOU. Recent inputs have been trainings in matters related to  technical assistance with RIL.

    PT Erna Djuliawati - Concession

    ED This is a 184,206 ha concession located along the western border of Central Kalimantan and is the only forest concession belonging to the Lyman Group. The concession supplies most of the log requirements for it’s plywood industry in Sanggau.

    PT Erna has long been a leader in sustainable forest management and was one of the first forest concession in Indonesia to achieve FSC certification.

    TFF’s Involvement
    Erna is one of the first partners in TFF’s forest market linking program and received various technical assistance inputs and RIL training. TFF also provide guidance in CoC issues.

    In September, 2005, Erna achieved FSC certification under a TFF certification assistance program.

    Current Status
    TFF continues to provide technical assistance on certification matters under an existing MOU. Recent inputs have been trainings in matters related to social issues as well as technical assistance with RIL.

    PT Graha Sentosa Permai

    GSP This is a relatively new concession carved out of an older forest management unit. Current size is 44,970 haof which much is still untouched.

    The concession pre-saws some of its volume in a local sawmill and ships rough lumber to it’s industry in Tangerang, Banten Province, Java. The remainder of the logs are sold to other industries.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has provided basic assessment of current operating conditions and CoC and legality conditions. TFF has recently implemented the first in a series of RIL trainings.

    Current Status
    Graha has made a commitment to achieve FSC certification and has requested a comprehensive RIL training program as well as technical assisstance for certification.

    PT Indexim Utama - Concession

    IUThis 52,480 ha concession is situated in gentle hilly terrain near the convergence of Central Kalimantan with East and South Kalimantan.

    Indexim Utama ships all of it’s logs to the corporate industrial complex of PT Surya Satrya Timur Corp., a plywood manufacturing industry located in Banjarmasin, South Kalimanatan.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has provided a number of RIL training inputs and has advised Indexim on preparations for a legality and CoC audit.  TFF also represents Indexim to the Borneo Initiative.

    Current Status
    Indexim is a holder of the TFF “Legal Verified” certificate. Indexim has also undergone a pre-assessment evaluation against the FSC standard and is progressing rapidly towards full certification. The concession FSC certified in May 2013

    PT Sari Bumi Kusuma - Concession

    SBKThis well known 147,600 ha concession on the border with West Kalimantan and the Bukit Raya/Baka National Park is widely recognized as a leader in intensive forest management in Indonesia.

    The concession is the main wood supply for the Alas Kusuma industrial complex located in Pontianak, West Kalimantan.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF’s involvement with SBK dates back to before 2000. TFF has provided a wide range of inputs from RIL training, technical guidance, CoC, and certification assistance. SBK was one of the initial participants in TFF’s forest-market linking project and subsequently went on to achieve FSC certification in September 2006 under a TFF certification support program.

    Current Status
    SBK maintains a close working relationship with TFF. Ongoing activities include: assistance with outstanding certification issues, specific training in social issues, and guidance on outstanding HCV issues. Now the concession FSC re-certified in September 2012, valid until 2017.


    PT Sarmiento Parakantja Timber (Sarpatim) - Concession

    SPTThis 216,580 ha forest is the ‘flagship’ concession of the Kayu Lapis group. Logs from this concession are processed at the company’s primary industry in Gresik, East Java.

    Sarpatim has embarked on a program of intensive forest management and is now working towards credible forest certification.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF’s initial involvement with Sarpatim dates back to 2003 with an introductory training in RIL. More recently, TFF has provided intensive follow-up training and is now assisting the company in preparing for a CoC and legality audit. TFF has also provided training in socio-economic evaluation and monitoring.

    Current Status
    TFF represents Serpatim under 'The Borneo Initiative', a Dutch funded certification support program. The concession was awarded the FSC certificate for SFM on December 21, 2011.

    PT Sindo Lumber - Concession

    SLThis 76,925 ha concession is situated in gentle hilly terrain near the convergence of Central Kalimantan with East and South Kalimantan.

    Sindo Lumber ships all of it’s logs to the corporate industrial complex of PT Surya Satrya Timur Corp., a plywood manufacturing industry located in Banjarmasin, South Kalimanatan.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has provided RIL training and advice of legality and CoC.

    Current Status
    The company has passed a TUV audit against the 'Legal Compliance' standard and has been awarded a certificate of legal origin by TFF.

    PT SBK Delang - Concession

    Nursery PT SBK-DelangLocated in Central Kalimantan just across the border from PT Suka Jaya Makmur, this 60,700 ha concession is part of the wood supply equation for the Alas Kusuma factory in Ketapang.

    TFF’s Involvement
    Delang has joined the Alas Kusuma concession pursuing FSC certification and has requested representation from TFF.

    Current Status
    RIL training program is under way.

     

    PT Tingang Karya Mandiri - Concession PREVIOUSLY WORKED WITH TFF
    TKMThis is a 44,925 ha swamp forest concession located on the Barito River.

    The concession practices railway logging and extracts primarily ‘Swamp Bankirai’ which is pre-cut in a small sawmill in the concession. Rough lumber is then shipped to the company’s industry in Surabaya into solid wood moulding products.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has provided base-line inputs on legality and CoC matters under a ‘verification of legal origin’ program.

    Current Status
    Smartwood has conducted a legality audit and issued VLO certificate.n.

    PT Sarang Sapta Putra - Concession PREVIOUSLY WORKED WITH TFF
    SSPThis 49,500 ha concession is situated in hilly terrain of the Murung Raya district in Central Kalimantan.

    The concession company has made a commitment for achieving certification and has requested TFF assistance for RIL training.

    TFF’s Involvement
    To-date, three training sessions in RIL has been delivered to concession staff.

    Current Status
    This concession is currently inactive, but has enrolled in The Borneo Initiative certification support program.

    PT Kayu Tribuana Rama - Concession
    PREVIOUSLY WORKED WITH TFF
    This 98,765 ha concession of KTR is situated on moderate to gently sloping terrain north of Sampit, Central Kalimantan.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has recently signed an MOU with this company and has just completed an RIL training needs assessment.

    Current Status
    RIL training inputs has been delivered, however it is proposed that these trainings will be repeated due to the long period of inactivity.

    PT Akhates Plywood - Concession PREVIOUSLY WORKED WITH TFF
    APThis 94,380 ha concession is located in the heart of Borneo stroddling the river Murung, a major tributary of the Barito river.

    The concession has been inactive for a number of years but plans to restart operations in 2010.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has signed an MOU with the company and has recently completed a base-line assessment of the concession.

    Current Status
    Currently inactive; future status uncertain .

    PT Sinergy Hutan Sejati - Concession PREVIOUSLY WORKED WITH TFF
    This 68,980 ha concession is located on the Barito river approximately one hour by speedboat south of Muara Teweh. 

    Already into its second rotation, this concession includes both dry land forest as well as a unique form of swamp forest.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has recently signed an MOU for RIL training and technical cooperation.

    Current Status
    Future status uncertain.

    PT Amindo Wana Persada - Concession

    AWPThis relatively new concession is the result of a division of the former PT Alas Helau. The new area of 43,680 ha is located in a remote location in Berau District. The company is rapidly developing its human and physical resources with the aim of achieving sustainable forest management.

    Most of the logs from this concession are processed in the Samarinda industry of Tirta Mahakam.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has carried out a training needs assessment and has proposed a long-term training program in RIL and related issues concerned with legality and CoC. The first training in RIL was carried out in late 2006.

    Current Status
    Company management has experienced difficulty recruiting adequate competent staff, but is preparing for further training inputs.

    PT Belayan River Timber - Concession

    BRTThis 97,500 ha concession, located in the mid-reaches of the Mahakam River, has some of the richest timber stands in the country.

    Ownership of the concession changed hands in 2008 to a Surabaya based company.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted RIL training, base line assessment for certification and has prepared a certification action plan based on a full-assessment carried out by Control Union Certification.

    Current Status
    PT Belayan River Timber achieved FSC certification on April 28, 2012.

    PT Kemakmuran Berka Timber - Concession

    KBTThis 72,000 ha concession is located in the upper reaches of the Mahakam River and is a member of the Roda Mas Group. Logs are processed in the company’s industry, PT Tirtah Mahakam in Samarinda.

    Together with the adjacent PT Roda Mas Timber, this area is a prime candidate for forest certification.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted a training needs assessment and has proposed this concession for further assistance under a certification support program.

    Current Status
    KBT management has chosen technical assistance offered by TNC in mapping, social issues, HCV, and certification support. Now the concession already FSC certified in May 2012.
     

    PT Narkata Rimba Timber - Concession

    NRTLocated in the mountainous terrain of East Kalimantan, this 68,000 ha concession is nearing the end of its first, 20 year license.

    Due to the terrain condition, the concession has been relatively lightly logged and logged over forests are in excellent condition.

    The Alas Kusuma Group, sold this concession to Surabaya based industry, in 2008.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted a base-line assessment against the RIL standard and has provided technical inputs in support of the company's certification effort.

    Current Status
    PT. Narkata Rimba achieved FSC certification on August 16, 2011.


    PT Ratah Timber - Concession

    RTThis 97,690 ha concession belonging to the Roda Mas Group, is located in the mid-reaches of the Mahakam drainage.

    The concession has weathered some difficult times but has now regrouped and is embarking on an aggressive program towards sustainable forest management with keen support of senior management at corporate headquarters.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF’s initial involvement dates back to TFF’s establishment in Indonesia. TFF has signed an MOU which commits the company to an intensive training program in RIL. Corporate management are also keen to prepare the company for legality and chain of custody audit.

    Current Status
    An ambitious training program in RIL was implemented in 2008 / 2009.  Ratah Timber has joined the Borneo Initiative under WWF - GFTN sponsorship. The concession received FSC certificate in March 2013.

    PT Roda Mas Timber - Concession

    RMTLocated in the upper reacher of the Mahakam River of East Kalimantan, this 99,520 ha concession is long-standing participant of TFF's training activities.

    Roda Mas ships all of its logs to the industry of PT. Tirta Mahakam located in Samarinda.

    TFF’s Involvement
    Roda Mas has long standing history of involvement with TFF for RIL training and more recently, with legality and CoC issues.  Roda Mas was awarded a certificate of legality in October 2007 by TUV-Indonesia as a recognition member of TFF's Forest-Market Linking Program and joined the TBI certification support program under TFF sponsorship.

    Current Status
    The company achieved FSC certification on April 29, 2012.

    PT Sumalindo Lestari Jaya II - Concession

    SLJThis major concession of 276,600 ha has a solid reputation as one of Indonesia’s leaders in the forest sector. Sumalindo Unit II, was the second concession in the country to achieve FSC certification but has now allowed its certificate to expire.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has provided specific technical assistance related to harvesting practices and the utilization of logging waste. This has involved training and technical advice.

    Current Status
    TFF continues to provide technical advice on request from the company on specific issues primarily related to harvesting and utilization.
     

    PT Tirta Mahakam Resources - Industry (Location : Samarinda)

    TMRThis is a major plywood producer located in Samarinda, East Kalimantan.

    The industry receives its logs from its corporate concessions located on the Mahakam River as well as from a member of closely affiliated concessions.

    TFF’s Involvement
    This industry is the focal point for a major initiative to qualify all of its supplying concessions for a certificate of legality and independently monitored CoC systems. Once these systems are in place, this industry will be the largest supplier of Legally Verified plywood on the market.

    Current Status
    Tirta Mahakam Samarinda as well as its flooring industry in Gresik, were awarded a CoC certificate for "Legal Verified" in early 2008 and has also achieved FSC-CoC certification.

    PT Timberdana - Concession

    TMDThis 76,340 hectares concession is located in the gentle terrain typical of the lower reaches of the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan. Timberdana logs are processed in the plywood industry of PT. Rimba Karya Raya located downstream in the Samarinda area.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF delivered a full scale RIL training program which extend into 2010.

    Current Status
    The company is now considering joining the TBI certification support program with TFF assistance.


    PT Civika Wana Lestari - Concession

    CWLLocated in the upper reaches of the Kayan River in East Kalimantan, this 53,000 haconcession (along with its sister concession, the adjacent PT Sarana Trirasa Bhakti), are some of the most recent entries into the TFF RIL training program.

    TFF’s Involvement
    An MOU between the company and TFF has spelled out the framework for a RIL training program.  Three training modules were delivered in 2010.  Participants from both the CWL and the adjacent STB concession participated in the training.

    Current Status
    In mid-2012, TFF was contracted to provide refresher training in RIL.


    PT Sarana Trirasa Bhakti - Concession

    STBLocated in the upper reaches of the Kayan River in East Kalimantan, this 41,000 ha concession (along with its sister concession, the adjacent PT Civika Wana Lestari), are some of the most recent entries into the TFF RIL training program.

    TFF’s Involvement
    An MOU between the company and TFF has spelled out the framework for a RIL training program.  Three training modules were delivered in 2010.  Participants from both the STB and the STB concession combined for a joint training in RIL contour and tree position mapping.

    Current Status
    In mid-2012, TFF was contracted to provide refresher training in RIL.


    PT Balikpapan Forest Industries - Concession PREVIOUSLY WORKED WITH TFF

    BFIThis is one of the oldest concessions in Indonesia and is now well into its second cutting cycle. The concession supports a major plywood factory located nearby.

    Located across the inlet from the major city of Balikpapan, this 140,845 ha concession and its adjacent industry have faced many challenges over the 30+ years since its establishment. Faced with a shrinking concession area and an ever more demanding market situation, the management have requested assistance in achieving the management goal of forest certification.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has signed and MOU with BFI and has just completed a comprehensive gap assessment for certification as the first step in implementing this MOU.

    Current Status
    A wide range of activities proposed and now under review.

    Civika Wana LestariLocated in the upper reaches of the Kayan River in East Kalimantan, this 53,000 haconcession (along with its sister concession, the adjacent PT Sarana Trirasa Bhakti), are some of the most recent entries into the TFF RIL training program.

    TFF’s Involvement

    PT Inhutani II - Malinau Unit - Concession

    PT Inhutani II - Malinau UnitIn March 2013, Inhutani II entered into an agreement with TFF to represent its three management units in the Malinau District as certification coach under The Borneo Initiative certification support program.

    TFF’s Involvement
    During the course of the past few months, TFF has delivered the first two modules of an RIL training program with funding from the Responsible Asia Forest & Trade (RAFT) program as well as preparing Inhutani II for an FSC Pre-Assessment which was carried out in October, 2013.
    Current Status
    This 29,040 ha concession has been much reduced from its original size to make way for massive coal mine developments. TFF remains actively involved in training, demonstration, and certification support activities.


    PT Inhutani II - Semamu Unit - Concession

    Inhutani II - Semamu UnitIn March 2013, Inhutani II entered into an agreement with TFF to represent its three management units in the Malinau District as certification coach under The Borneo Initiative certification support program.

    TFF’s Involvement
    During the course of the past few months, TFF has delivered the first two modules of an RIL training program with funding from the Responsible Asia Forest & Trade (RAFT) program as well as preparing Inhutani II for an FSC Pre-Assessment which was carried out in October, 2013.
    Current Status
    This 71,375 ha concession is located in rugged terrain to the north of the Malinau river and has only seen logging for a few years. TFF remains actively involved in training, demonstration, and certification support activities.


    PT Inhutani II - Sei Tubu Unit - Concession

    Inhutani II - Sei Tubu UnitIn March 2013, Inhutani II entered into an agreement with TFF to represent its three management units in the Malinau District as certification coach under The Borneo Initiative certification support program.

    TFF’s Involvement
    During the course of the past few months, TFF has delivered the first two modules of an RIL training program with funding from the Responsible Asia Forest & Trade (RAFT) program as well as preparing Inhutani II for an FSC Pre-Assessment which was carried out in October, 2013.
    Current Status
    This 99,100 ha concession is located in very rugged terrain. Very little logging has been done in this concession with a renewed effort initiated in mid-2013.

    PT Gema Hutani Lestari - Concession

    GHLThe 148,450 ha concession of Gema Hutani Lestari is located in two major blocks on the mountainous Island of Buru in the province of South Kalimantan. The company currently operates in the Northern block. This concession is the main log supply of the sister company, PT Katingan Timber Celebes, located in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has provided a number of RIL training inputs and the company is now building up its capacity for implementation. TFF has also conducted base-line assessments against legality and CoC standards.

    Current Status
    GHL has implemented an ITTO pilot project on timber tracking with TFF facilitation, and has now received a certificate of legal comlience from TUV.

    The company already FSC certified in November 2013.

    PT Telagabakti Persada - Concession

    TBPThis 63,405 ha concession is located on the island of Obi in North Maluku province. The concession is a member of the KLI Group and has enrolled in the Borneo Initiative certification support program with TFF technical support.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF will shortly commence field activities consisting of an RIL training program and a range certification support activities.

    Current Status
    The concession already signed MoU with TBI for certification support program. Rainforest Alliance preassessment for FSC in May 2013. Now starting implementation Certification Action Plan under assistance from TFF.

    PT Hanurata II - Concession

    HIIThis 209,670 ha forest management unit is one of three concessions controlled by the Hanuratta Group in the Papua provinces. The concession is located northeast of Kaiman in West Papua province. At the present time, company only extracts Merbau from this concession at a rate of less than two trees per hectare.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted a base-line assessment against legality and CoC standards to assist the company to prepare for a third party audit.

    Current Status
    The company has been awarded a VLO certificate by Smartwood and TFF.

    PT Mamberamo Alas Mandiri - Concession

    MAt 691,700 ha, this is the largest timber concession in Indonesia. First active between 1992-2002 under the Kodeco Group, the concession has lain dormant till new ownership reactivated operations in 2006. The company is still building up its human resources. This concession is located along the West bank of the Memberamo River in Papua Province.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted a base-line assessment against legality and CoC standards to assist the company to prepare for a third party audit.

    Current Status
    Two RIL training session have already been delivered and a repeat of all three RIL modules is being planned. The concession licence already expired Nov. 2012 and it is in renewal licence process.

    PT Yotefa Sarana Timber- Concession

    YSTThis 182,000 ha concession is a member of the KLI Group. The concession has been in operation since 1992 and is a major supplier for the KLI industrial complex in Sorong.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted a base-line assessment against legality and CoC standards to assist the company to prepare for a third party audit.

    Current Status
    The company has not yet indicated its intentions regarding a continued engagement.


    PT Bina Balantak Utama - Concession

    BBU
    This 325,000 ha concession is a member of the KLI Group.

    The concession has been in operation since 1992 and is a major supplier for the KLI industrial complex in Sorong.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted a base-line assessment against legality and CoC standards to assist the company to prepare for a third party audit. The company recently signed an MOU with TFF to engage in RIL training and technical support for certification.

    Current Status
    Field activities will commence before the end of 2012. The concession already signed MoU with TBI for certification support program. Rainforest Alliance preassessment for FSC in October 2013. Now starting implementation Certification Action Plan under assistance from TFF.

    PT Henrison Iriana Arar Sorong - Industry  (Location - Sorong)

    HIASThis industrial complex belonging to the KLI Group, includes a plywood mill processing peeler logs from the company’s Papua concessions and producing finished plywood.

    In addition, the complex includes a sawmill which cuts primarily Merbau into rough lumber which is then processed into finished product at the companies industry in Semarang, Central Java.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted a base-line assessment for CoC to assist the company in preparing for a third party audit.

    Current Status
    A CoC training session is being planed.

    PT Wapoga Mutiara Timber II - Concession

    wmt This 196,900 ha concession is located on gently rolling terrain some 5 hours drive west of Jayapura.  Well over half of the concession is still virgin forest as Wapoga begins operations under its second license in mid-2012.

    TFF’s Involvement
    In the past year, TFF has completed three RIL training inputs to the concession. Smartwood has issued a VLO certificate under a TTAP sponsored project.

    Current Status
    TFF has recently signed an MOU with Wapoga in which the company commits to full implementation of RIL.  The company has also joined TBI certification assistance under the TFF technical support.

    PT Manokwari Mandiri Lestari - Concession PREVIOUSLY WORKED WITH TFF

     

    MML1This 83,240 ha concession located in the "neck" of West Papua province in the most recent concession to engage in TFF's verification of legal origin program in Papua.

    TFF’s Involvement
    TFF has conducted a base-line assessment against legality and COC Standards to assist the company to prepare for a third party audit.

    Waiting for follow-up response from MML and its industry sponsor.

    TFF has conducted a baseline assessment for setting up a CoC system in the industry for wood coming from the company’s timber concession PT Gema Hutani Lestari in South Maluku.
